- This rug hails from the Kars region of Turkey, a place where livestock farming is deeply ingrained in the way of life. In this area, it is not uncommon to find wool that has not been dyed, but instead is taken directly from the sheep. Looking at the brown wool in this kilim, I can tell that such natural wool has been used. Moreover, it is clear that this rug was woven for personal use, as evidenced by the abundance of abrash and the varying shades within each color, showcasing the weaver’s individual touch.
- Kars is a province located in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. It is primarily a rural area, with its economy centered around agriculture and livestock farming. Like all art forms, the production of handicrafts often flourishes where the raw materials are most abundant. Carpets, kilims, and other woven textiles are no exception to this rule. In Kars and its surrounding areas, where sheep farming is a way of life, various woven textiles such as carpets, kilims, çerim, zili, sumak, and çiği kilims have been produced for years in line with this tradition.
